Watermelon (FRUIT series)
acrylic and oil paint on masonite
FRUIT is a series of paintings that depict four youthful, idealized women, alongside fresh fruits that are free of imperfections. The fruits included are pears, lemons, watermelons, and plums. The relationship between the figures and the fruit emphasizes the theme of fertility and beauty in these images. Historically, many women have been valued only for their appearance and the ability to bear children. Consumerism plays a role in perpetuating these stereotypes in American society. Stock photos of women from Getty Images were used as reference photos, because they are often unrealistic and carefully posed. All of the women are seemingly flawless, and fit into most Western standards of beauty. FRUIT is a representation of the traditional gender roles and social expectations that affect women in American society.
