We Are Not Illegal is a series of paintings that depict a Black same-sex couple in casual and domestic settings. My intention was to normalize same-sex relationships and present the figures in situations that viewers will find relatable. The paintings are intended to resemble illustrations from children’s’ books. The series is named after gay rights demonstrations that took place in Nigeria.
